Daniel Lee Collins died Dec. 8, 2012 in Arrowhead Hospital, Glendale, AZ, where he was admitted for surgery on his right leg and foot for gout.
He was born Sept. 20, 1921 in Spokane to parents, Clayton M. and Mary (Lee) Collins. He grew up in Metaline Falls, where he graduated from high school in 1939 as one in a class of 12 (sixcboys and six girls). He attended Whitman College in Walla Walla from 1939-43, where he graduated with a degree in Economics. There he met Elizabeth Ann Low from Roslyn. They were married in November 1943. Dan enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific as skipper of a mine sweeper and was awarded two Bronze Stars. Upon discharge, he went to the University of Washington Law School and graduated in 1948. He set up a law practice in Colville and also served as elected City Attorney until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the Elks in Colville. The couple had three children, Jim, Dan and Susan. Elizabeth (Betty Ann) passed away in 1993 and he married Dorothy Puckett in Yuma, AZ in 1994. He took up permanent residence in Litchfield Park, AZ in 2006. An avid outdoorsman, Dan pursued his passion for fishing and bird hunting from Alaska, through Canada, the western states and down to Mexico. He loved golf, both the sport and the camaraderie, and was active in it until his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan, and by his son, Dan. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Dottie), Litchfield Park, AZ; a son, James (Jim) and wife Marcia, Richland; step-children, Bill and Jeanette Puckett, Cathy and Mark Alder and Debbie Kernan, all of Oregon; his grandchildren, JoDee Newcomb, Marnaeâ€™ Litke, Annette Collins, Adrianna Collins, Elizabeth and Andy Peck, Jeremy Krasin, Ben Krasin, Laurel and Doheon Kim, great-grandchildren, Bracken, Meghan and Paige Sorensen, Trae Litke, Dan and Chris Newcomb. Per his request there was no funeral service. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear, AZ.
