Donald Grub

December 15, 2011

Donald Neil Grubb passed away peacefully at his home in Chewelah on Dec. 6, 2011. Donnie was born in Wattford, North Dakota on Dec. 9, 1934 to Robert Grubb-Charlson and Nora Ann (Barhart). Donnie was one of 10 children. The Grubb family moved to the Chewelah area about the time Donnie was in third or fourth grade. He graduated from Jenkins High School in 1953.
Donnie held many jobs as a young man in the farming, logging, and construction fields. During this time, he met and married Dena Rae Mackie in 1954. They began raising their family while traveling with Don’s construction work. In 1955, son Don was born. He was joined by Ron a year later in 1958; Dennis in 1963, and Randy in 1966. They made their permanent home in Chewelah when their boys were ready for school.
During Don’s many adventures, rock mining became his focal point and in 1963 he founded White Stone Company. He remained steady in the rock mining business until the present day. Don has various mines, but could most often be found six days a week on Kelly Hill, mining, blasting, and crushing rock that was sold throughout the country.
Early each morning, on his way to work, one of his favorite times was to stop and have coffee at Sandy’s or Barney’s with his friends. Camping at the Kettle River, teaching his sons and grandsons the mining business, bluegrass music, drawing cartoons for his “gal,” and horseback riding were among Donnie’s favorite things.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents; by one brother, Delanie; by his son, Randy; and by his grandson Jeremy.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Dena Rae Grubb; sons, Don (Candy), Kettle Falls; Ron (Nancy) and Dennis (Jennifer), Chewelah; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all who live nearby.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, (corner of Highway 395 and Webster in Chewelah).
