Our dear, sweet mother, Dorothy Barrett, passed away on December 18, 2011 at the age of 95. She was born November 19, 1916 in Douglas. In 1933 she graduated from Waterville High School, and in June 1935 she graduated from Morse Beauty School in Spokane. After working a short time in Seattle, she moved back to Waterville where she began courting David Gallaher from Mansfield. He was a wheat and cattle rancher. They were married October 29, 1939 in the Lutheran Church in Douglas. David was a pilot, and Dorothy received her pilot’s license soon after they were married. She did her solo flight over the Columbia River near Wenatchee. Together they had 3 daughters, Sheran, Marcia and Patty.
David was killed July 2, 1944 in his private plane on the Mansfield Ranch. In 1946 she moved to Waterville and there she met Art Barrett who was working as a meat cutter. They were married January 26, 1947. Art had three daughters, Kay, Janis and Margaret, making a blended family of six daughters under the age of eight. In 1947 they moved to the farm on Kelly Hill. They farmed for over 50 years and were married over 55 years before Art passed away on October 27, 2003.
Dorothy lived a full life. She rode horses, caught fish, flew airplanes, played the piano and organ, hunted elk, played pinochle, square danced and performed in plays at the Kettle River Grange. She was an accomplished China painter and master gardener, canning much of her produce. Her pies were famous. Dorothy loved the country and the farm. While living at Parkview in Colville this past year, she enjoyed weekly trips to the farm with her daughters. Her heart was always there. Dorothy will be missed.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters Sheran Krall and husband Bob of Ione, Marcia Hirsch and husband Ken of Ione, and Patty Braun and husband Dennis of Colville; her three step-daughters Kay House of Colville, Janis Livermore of Rainier, and Margaret Brown and husband Paul of Tensed, ID; her two sisters Esther Gallaher of Kettle Falls and Florence Smith of Wenatchee; her 21 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 23 at the Kettle River Grange in Barstow. The graveside will follow at Kelly Hill Cemetery.
