Dorothy Young

September 26, 2012

Dorothy Elizabeth Young passed away in Colville on Sept. 19, 2012 at the age of 91. She was born the daughter of Ezra and Anna (Warfel) Lehman on March 30, 1921 in Christiana, PA.
Dorothy attended and graduated from high school in Cochranville, PA in 1939 (a class of 38 students). She resided in Pennsylvania until 1967, and then moved to the Seattle area. In 1983, Dorothy’s late son, Jim, moved her from Western Washington to his property on Mingo Mountain. She loved being on the mountain, taking long walks nearly every day, regardless of the weather. She loved her dogs, cats, and the local wildlife. She fed the wild turkeys, other wild birds, and deer. She even had one doe that would eat out of her hand for several years.
Dorothy enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, canning the fruits and vegetables from her garden and the local orchards. She made wonderful Oregon grape and Elderberry jellies from the fruits that she picked. She sometimes gave them as gifts. Over the years, Dorothy became active in her church, helping wherever needed; she served as card chairperson. She was involved with the Kettle Falls Senior Citizens Center, where she served as secretary. She also belonged to the Greenwood Chattermaids Home Ec. Club and the Rhododendron Home Ec. Club. She also enjoyed bible study groups.
Dorothy moved to Kettle Falls in 2006. In 2007, the Kettle Falls Senior Center elected her to be “Ma Kettle” for that year and elected Keith Young to be “Pa Kettle”. After many parades that summer, a romance blossomed and they were married on April 4, 2008.
Dorothy and Keith continued to be involved in their church and the Kettle Falls Senior Citizens’ Center, where she continued with her bible studies and her ladies clubs. Though no longer growing her own garden in Kettle Falls, they continued canning fruits and jellies together and enjoyed watching the birds they fed in the yard. Dorothy also enjoyed going to the harvest din¬ners at churches and grange halls and going up to Canada for Chinese food.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Bowermaster and Ruth Wilson; and her son, Jim McConaghy.
She is survived by her husband, Keith Young, Kettle Falls; sons Ed McConaghy and wife Carol; David Binkley and wife Kathy; step-children, Lorraine Snyder and husband Frank, Steve Young, Clay Young and wife Melodie; Mark Young and wife Elisabeth; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service for Dorothy was held Sept. 24 at the Kettle Falls Community Church, with Pastor Tony Pinkham officiating. A graveside service followed at Meyers Falls Cemetery in Kettle Falls.
If one so wishes, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s name to ones choice. Please visit the online memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com. Danekas F¬neral Chapel & Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.
