Ella Wilkie

Ella Rhodes (Cole) Wilkie, a resident of Colville, passed away June 15, 2011 at Buena Vista Nursing Home in Colville at the age of 93. Ella was born on Oct. 14, 1917 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Lee Frank and Minnie (Hampton) Rhodes.Ella loved being a mom, grandma and friend and was particularly proud of being a teacher, especially to elementary students. She was teaching at the one room schoolhouse at Blue Point when Pete and Ruth Gotham introduced her to Lloyd Cole, her love. F.H and Ruth Cole met Ella and chose her for their only son. They married and raised their three children in Colville.After their divorce, Ella taught school in Spokane, Shelton and Kingman, AZ. Upon retirement, she returned to Spokane for several years, where she enjoyed time with her mom and brothers.She moved to Colville in 1995 to be close to Doug and Marsha and the Colville Valley, which she dearly loved, especially Colville Mountain and the cross.Ella took great pride in her teaching skills, which were evident by her ability to relate and communicate with all ages. She had a fantastic sense of humor and her laugh made you smile. When the kids were teenagers the house was often full with their friends. Teenage kids especially appreciated Ella’s ability to listen and understand them. She enjoyed time with family and friends, music, playing piano, Western movies and reading. She was a member of the Colville Valley Baptist Church.We will miss the way she would listen and give us advice, guidance and encouragement.Ella was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Lloyd Cole; daughter, Lorna Cole Hutsell; her Rhodes brothers, Bill, Ray, Raleigh, Lew and Sherman. She is survived by son, Doug, and his wife, Hazel, Cusick; Marsha (Christman) Cole, Colville; her sister, Glenys Sears, San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Marjory Rhodes, Spokane; grandchildren, grandson Bryan Hutsell and his son, Alan, San Antonio, TX; grandson, Steven Hutsell, Colorado Springs, CO; grandson, Brad Cole and his son, Stewart, and his daughter, Jocelyn, Vancouver; grand-daughter, Dawnese (Cole) Sahota and her daughter, Kylie, and her son, Colton, Vancouver; grandson, Derek Christman and his son, Joe, Aloha, OR; grandson Duane Christman and his daughters, Taylor, Markie and Erin, Union, OR; grand-daughter, Darla (Christman) Ownes, and her daughter, McKenna, and her sons, Christian and Mark, Bend, OR; grandson, Daryl Christman and his children, Elya, Malachi, Judah, Caleb and Christopher, Sweet Home, OR.A celebration of the life of Mrs. Ella Wilkie will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at Stephani’s Oak Street Grill; 157 S.
