Eugene Lantzy

January 11, 2012

Eugene Ray Lantzy passed away peacefully at his home in Chewelah on Jan. 5, 2012 at the age of 89. Eugene was one of six children born to the late John and Clara (Denison) Lantzy.
Eugene was born on June 3, 1922 in St. Maries, Idaho and shortly thereafter relocated to Miles. In 1929, Eugene's family relocated to a farm on the Columbia River near Hunters, where he attended school at Fruitland and completed high school at Hunters.
Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Navy and started his training Sept. 29, 1942 at Farragut Naval Station during WWII. Eugene served aboard the USS Celeno AK76. He spent 2½ years in the Pacific Theater, including Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. After Iwo Jima, he served as the Master at Arms at the Shoemaker Naval Station and was honorably discharged on Dec. 25, 1945.
Eugene married Suzanne Singer on Nov. 6, 1965 and lived near Fruitland, where they raised their two sons. Eugene worked as a farmer, logger, and mechanic for the Stevens County Road Department. He served as Master of the Enterprise Grange, member of the Hunters American Legion Post, life member of the Guadalcanal Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and firearms safety instructor. He was recently distinguished as an honorary fire commissioner of the State of Washington.
Those who knew him remember Eugene as always being a positive and selfless person, even at the toughest of times. Eugene was constantly ready to lend a helping hand and continually found ways to keep himself busy. He enjoyed family get-togethers, vacations, fishing, shooting, and dabbling in various projects. His family and friends will fondly carry his memory in their hearts as a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Eugene will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and an infant sister.
