Evelyn Barker, born “Juanita Evelyn Benskin”, a resident of Spokane, passed away on Nov. 24, 2012 in Spokane. She was born on Aug. 31, 1931 in Port Gamble the daughter of Delbert Charles and Juanita Bernice (Siegel) Benskin. Evelyn was raised in Bremerton where she also attended school. Following high school, Evelyn married Raymond Carl Barker on November 15, 1948 in Kent. Evelyn worked in a local mercantile store before beginning her family. She then turned her focus to raising her children and caring for the needs of her home. Their family moved to Cle Elum in the mid 1960’s where she and Ray operated the Salmon La Sac Resort. She ran the resort store, cabins and restaurant while Ray was in charge of guest activities. In 1974, they returned to Bremerton for a short time before relocating to the Gig Harbor area. While in both Bremerton and Gig Harbor, Evelyn opened her home to many children in need within the foster child system. She and Ray also provided adult care in their last few years at Gig Harbor. It was in 1994 that they moved to Northeast Washington and made their home in the Cedar Creek area north of Colville. Evelyn found enjoyment in the beauty of her surroundings and her new found retirement. She and Ray shared a passion for the outdoors. They took many hiking trips and several mountain climbing expeditions including Mt. Rainer, twice. Together they also traveled to visit new places and cultures including, Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Ireland, Scotland, England, Austria, France, Mexico and Israel. Evelyn’s gift was kindness, which she shared without reservation. She led by example in service to others and loving goodness to all. She opened her home and her heart with generosity. Evelyn was without question, a hero in the hearts of those who loved her. Her husband, Ray, son, Darryl and six of her siblings preceded her in death. Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Kay Van Horn, Brewster, Carla Heater and her husband, Gregg, Colville; son, Dallas Barker, Spokane; brothers, Wilbur “Bill” Benskin and his wife, Virginia, Bremerton, Delbert “Bud” Benskin and his wife, Linda, Branson, MO; sister, Anita Buchanan, Port Orchard; eight grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. The funeral service for Mrs. Evelyn Barker was Nov. 30 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Colville. The graveside service followed at Mountain View Park Cemetery. Evelyn’s grandson, Mr. Luke Fridenmaker will officiate the services. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
