Hubbard headed to Santa Clara
class for Keating
Colville High senior Matt Hubbard has made an oral commitment to play for coach Kerry Keatingâs Santa Clara Broncos.
The 6-9 Hubbard, an All-Great Northern League and Northeast A League pick his first three years at CHS and the teamâs leading scorer and rebounder all three seasons, says heâs excited to be heading to the West Coast Conference school.
âIt feels so good to have gotten through the whole recruiting process,â one of the top prep players in the Northwest said last week. âIt was pretty stressful toward the end of it.â
Hubbard will sign his official National Letter of Intent in Colville on Nov. 13.
Hubbard, who has played AAU basketball with the top high school players in the nation, had narrowed his list of schools toward the end of the summer to Santa Clara, University of the Pacific, the University of Idaho, Montana and the University of Portland.
âThose were the schools that were seriously interested,â noted Hubbard, who was also on Gonzaga Universityâs radar for a time.
Hubbard, who says he is planning to major in business at the Jesuit Catholic university in Californiaâs Silicon Valley, added that there were around 10 schools that âI had developed relationships with and had shown heavy interest.â
The highest profile prep basketball player in CHS history said he chose Santa Clara over University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA) because of the feel he had for the private university of just over 5,000 students and how well he connected with head coach Keatingâs current roster.
âIt was just a feel I had when I was on campus (at Santa Clara) and how well I connected with the guys,â Hubbard added. âThe decision was tough because two of my closest friends and teammates (AAU) committed to Pacificâ¦and Pacific has a great coaching staff.
âBut I loved the coaches (at Santa Clara)â¦and then the fact they have great academics made it feel like a perfect fit.â
