Hubbard leads Colville to a pair of wins

NWC, Okanogan up next this week

Colville High (2-0) got the 2012-2013 boy’s basketball season off to a fast start last weekend with a pair of rugged road wins.
On Friday, Colville led much of the way, then withstood a fourth quarter rally to hold off Class 2B Reardan, 47-41. On Saturday at Sandpoint, CHS fell behind early, but behind 6-9 junior post Matt Hubbard, the Indians won, 46-39.
Hubbard, hobbled somewhat on Friday after sustaining a leg injury in last Tuesday’s jamboree at Chewelah, was simply dynamic on Saturday in the non-league test against a young and talented Border League team from SHS.
Hubbard scored 26 points, pulled down 23 rebounds and had seven blocked shots at Sandpoint. If those numbers for rebounds and blocked shots aren’t new Colville school records, they are certainly close.

Nearly perfect weekend from three-point line

Hubbard also dished out four assists. Easily Colville’s best outside shooter at 6-9, he was four of five from distance. He made all four of his three-point attempts one night earlier.
CHS head coach John Foulkes was understandably pleased with Hubbard’s play and with the overall play of his team.
“That was a really tough back-to-back road trip,” Foulkes said. “It was tough on us physically, but I thought we did a good job of battling both nights.”
On Saturday night, it simply came down to a case of Hubbard dominating on both sides of the ball.
“Sandpoint was a much better opponent (than Reardan one night earlier),” Foulkes pointed out. Sandpoint has some weapons. They have two to three players that can score and they have some size.
“I was really proud of Matt—his demeanor, his toughness and intensity. That’s the best he has played for us. He was just very dynamic.
“He’s just a much-improved player physically and mentally.”
And he’s only a junior.
Tevyn Holling added 12 points in the win at Sandpoint. He was four of 11 from the field and three for three at the free throw line.
Foulkes said he hopes to have Tevyn’s brother Lukyn back in the rotation by the end of the month (still hasn’t been cleared after breaking a leg).
Point guard Jay Shoemaker was a steady hand out front. Shoemaker dished out five assists against Sandpoint and only committed two turnovers.
Sophomore guard Sam Artzis got his first start on Saturday, took care of the ball and hit a three-pointer.
“Our guard play was solid,” Foulkes said. “We were smart with the ball and got some good overall play there.”
Colville was 15 of 40 from the field (six of 14 from three-point distance) and committed 11 turnovers. Colville held a 38-33 edge on the boards.
Colville was 10 of 15 from the free throw line.
With the Indians doing a solid job out front pressuring the ball and Hubbard’s considerable presence down low, Sandpoint managed only 14 of 55 from the field. The Bulldogs were five of 17 from three-point distance.
In the Reardan game, Hubbard scored all 20 of his points in the first half. He actually outscored Reardan 20-18 in the first half.
Colville was 15 of 45 from the field and with Hubbard’s 4-4 perfecto, hit seven of 15 from three-point distance.
Colville turned the ball over only 11 times and held a 35-31 advantage on the boards. The Indians were 10 of 22 at the free throw line.
Reardan, with a pair of 6-6 inside players, simply had no inside game against Hubbard and his teammates, although the Indians defended Hubbard much more effectively in the second half.
RHS was 18 of 47 from the field, choosing to bomb away outside for much of the night (only two of 24 from three-point distance). Reardan was three of five from the free throw line.
THIS WEEK
The Indians are home this week. On Tuesday, Colville hosted 2B power Northwest Christian in their home opener. The game will mark the season opener for the Crusaders, who lost some key components off last season’s state runner-up team, but return another solid team that will likely contend for a state championship again.
On Saturday, Colville will host frequent rival Okanogan (scheduled for a 4 p.m. start) of the Caribou-Trail League.
The Bulldogs opened their season on Saturday with an impressive 70-46 win at Medical Lake. Jim Townsend, the brother of graduated 6-6 post Joe Townsend, the school’s all-time leading scorer, had 17 points. Fellow guard Justin Ricas led OHS with 26 points.
“NWC will test our mettle big-time,” Foulkes said. “They lost some kids (off last season’s team), but they have reloaded. And Okanogan knows us well and we know them. They have a couple of solid guards and Okanogan knows how to win.”
