Joseph Michael “Mike” Huff passed away at his home surrounded by his family on March 6, 2014. He was born on Oct. 1, 1938 in Seattle, the son of Leon and Doris (Jacoby) Huff. Mike grew up in Bothell, where he attended school at St. Edward’s Seminary, then St. Joseph’s Seminary in California. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959, proudly serving his county for four years. Although only serving in the Air Force for four years, Mike achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before his honorable discharge. While in the Air Force, Mike was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi where he met his wife, Elaine. Their first date was a midnight Mass on Easter in 1963, and the couple married in 1964. Mike and Elaine moved from Mississippi to Alaska, where Mike worked for RCA on the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) as a radar technician. Mike and Elaine started their family with their first four children while in Alaska. In 1972, they moved to Washington State, where Mike and Elaine added eight more children to the family. Mike went to work for Alcoa in 1977, where he was employed for over 20 years. He then retired and enjoyed spending his retirement doing volunteer work for Catholic Charities and grounds’ work at the Catholic Church in Colville. Mike was a “jack of all trades,” and a master of them all. When Mike was diagnosed with ALS, he had to give up his passion of volunteer work and grounds-keeping at the Church, which he considered his second home. In Mike’s spare time, he enjoyed gardening, wood splitting, reading history books and autobiographies, mostly on religious subjects, and following his beloved New York Yankees. Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Joanna Bernier; daughter, Julie, and son, Aaron. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; children Michael Huff, Tim Huff and wife Tami; Nick Huff, Nathan Huff and wife JinHee; Adam Huff and wife Katie; Jude Huff and wife Jacquelyn; Thomas Huff and wife Sara; Lisa Huff, Angela Milatz and husband Steve; Mary Lee and husband Bill; daughter-in-law Melanie Huff; siblings Judy Schwanke, Nick Huff, Paul Huff, Steve Huff, Greg Huff, and Peter Huff; 12 grandchildren (with two more on the way); and one great- grandchild. If one so wishes, memorial contributions can be made in Mike’s name to Food for the Poor, www.foodforthepoor.org. Service for Mike will begin with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Friday March 14 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colville.
