Kettle Falls’ season comes to an end

Bulldogs lose
a pair of games

Kettle Falls saw its 2013 fast-pitch softball season come to an end Saturday at Brewster in the Class 1A sub-regional (Bi-District).
The Lady Bulldogs, who finished second to Northeast A League champion Lakeside in the District 7 1A Tournament at Nine Mile Falls one week earlier, simply couldn’t get much going Saturday against either host Brewster of the CTL or Lakeside.
In their opener against BHS, Kettle Falls managed only three hits in a 7-2 loss. Hitting safely for KFHS were pitcher Krislin McInelly (double), Kelsey Eslick and Lauren Moak.
The Lady Bulldogs simply had no answers for Brewster freshman pitcher Markie Miller.
Brewster picked up eight hits, including Miller’s solo home run.

Have to face Lakeside in a loser-out game

“We just had a hard time getting our bats on the ball against Miller,” KFHS head coach Amy Owens said. “We just failed to get, or make any breaks in that game.”
It didn’t get any better against a Lakeside team that steamrolled through the NEA this spring before being upset 6-4 by Okanogan in their first game.
Keeley Morris was a one-woman wrecking crew for Okanogan, hitting three home runs, including a two-run shot in the seventh inning that broke a 4-all tie and propelled OHS to the win.
In the loser out game, Nikki Tiffany hit a three-run home run against Kettle Falls and the Eagles overcame an early 1-0 KFHS lead to post a 10-2 elimination game win.
Lakeside pounded out 16 hits.
Tiffany gave up four hits. Shortstop Emily Owens had two KFHS hits. Serena Pounds (solo home run) and Kourtney Keenan had the other two.
Facing a Lakeside team that Kettle Falls has had absolutely no luck against this spring was an unlucky break. It was the fifth meeting between the two teams. KFHS is 0-5 against the Eagles this season.

KFHS battled

“That wasn’t a lucky break for us,” Owens admitted. “But I was really proud of the way the girls kept their cool, worked together and kept fighting. A lot of our wins this season came in the bottom of the seventh inning. The girls never gave up.”
Finishing third during the regular NEA season and battling to a second seed out of District 7 was an accomplishment for the Lady Bulldogs, who will return a solid nucleus next spring.
“This is a team that played with a lot of class all season,” Owens said. “I’m happy with the way we represented Kettle Falls High school in the Northeast A this season. Our seniors did a great job of leading the team with positive attitudes and a strong work ethic. We are all going to miss them.”
Kettle Falls will miss four-year pitching veteran McInelly, Pounds and Eslick.
“We are definitely going to feel the loss of Krislin (McInelly) in the circle next year,” Owens said. “We have some work to do to be ready, but I have confidence that Jenna Stanard (freshman) and Teesha Ferguson (junior) will put in the time to step up and take over.
“We are looking at a few different options to fill in for Serena (Pounds) and Kelsey (Eslick) on the infield. Emily (Owens) and Kourtney (Keenan) will be returning to lead the infield.”
Lauren Moak, Shayla Berg, Sam Tallman and Haley Volking will share time in the outfield.

Appreciates support

Owens was appreciative of her team, and the support the Lady Bulldogs have received all season long.
“Thank you Bulldog Boosters for helping to pay our way to stay in Okanogan last Friday night,” Owens said. “And to Mandee Edwards for giving up so much of her time to coach for free…to parents and community members…thanks for all the support.”
