Kettle Falls High students serve as pages in Olympia

March 6, 2012

OLYMPIA--Haley McIrvin and Emily Owens, both sophomores at Kettle Falls High School, participated in the Senate Page Program dur¬ing the fifth week of the 2012 session. McIrvin and Owens were sponsored by Sen. Bob Morton (R-Kettle Falls).
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to get first-hand expe¬rience working in the Legisla¬ture. Pages get a variety of ex¬periences in their week-long stay in Olympia, including running errands, delivering mail, and paging in the Senate Chamber. Pages are also taught about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. McIrvin and Owens were two of 28 students chosen to participate last week.
“The page program offers a rare, firsthand opportunity to learn about state government,” said Morton. “I’m glad Haley and Emily were able to take advantage of it.”
McIrvin and Owens heard about the Senate Page Program through her mothers, who had come to the Capitol to promote higher education, and had talked with Sen. Morton about the opportunity for her daugh¬ters.
“I’m happy that I had the chance to come to Olympia,” said Owens. “I was able to learn about different bills that affect people all over Washing¬ton, not just in my area, which makes me want to get more in¬volved.”
When asked her favorite moment of the week, McIrvin said, “The best moment for me was when we were able to sit in on the Republican caucus. It was great to see how the proc¬ess works, and how the sena¬tors interact with each other.”
McIrvin likes to stay active by playing sports such as softball and volleyball. She is also in¬volved in 4-H and the Future Farmers of America. She is the daughter of Dave and Joy McIrvin of Colville.
Owens is on the varsity bas¬ketball and softball teams at her high school. She is also a part of the Future Farmers of America organization. She is the daughter of Stacey and Amy Owens of Kettle Falls.
