Lady Bulldogs down Springdale

December 21, 2011

Kettle Falls High picked up its first win of the season last week, downing visiting Springdale 36-30 behind Serena Pounds’ eight points and six rebounds.
Taylor Smith led Springdale with 13 points.
On Friday in the Palouse, KFHS trailed 30-8 at halftime at Colfax on the way to a 54-16 loss.
Hannah Harazin led Colfax (3-1, 3-0) with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Amelie Bruya added 11 points.
On Saturday, Kettle Falls dropped a 44-37 Bi-County League decision to visiting St. George’s (2-3, 2-0).
Josie Stanard led Kettle Falls with 12 points.
Alex Wert led St. Geo with 14 points.
KFHS head coach Tyler Edwards saw mostly improvement from his young team last week.
“We are making progress,” Edwards said on Monday. “We had our chances against St. George’s. It would have been nice to pull that one out.”
The difference in the St. George’s game was at the free throw line. The Dragons converted nine of 19. Kettle Falls was two of seven.
“We had several (scoring) opportunities in the last two-minutes that didn’t go in,” Edwards added.
Kettle Falls shot 31 percent from the field and 10 percent from three-point range.
St. George’s hit 38 percent of their field goal attempts.
Kettle Falls won the rebounding battle and committed a season-low 12 turnovers.
Stanard put together her best game of the season to date. In addition to her 12 points, she had three steals and four rebounds.
Pounds added nine points, nine rebounds and two steals.
One night earlier against another solid Colfax team, Kettle Falls was simply overmatched.
Not so against Springdale back on Dec. 13.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to win despite hitting only 26 percent of their field goal attempts. Springdale was worse (21 percent). KFHS was 12 of 20 at the free throw line. Springdale hit nine of 18.
Kettle Falls committed 20 turnovers.
Pounds had eight points and six rebounds. Guard Randi Goodnight also had eight points and six rebounds.
“I am just happy that we are able to be in some competitive games,” Edwards said. “We just need to keep improving.”
