The Washington State Legislature convened yesterday, Jan. 9, for a short 60-day session where they will attempt to make up a roughly $2 billion deficit in the state budget. The regular session convened just weeks after the closure of a "special session" that aimed to outline budget cuts and adjustments prior to the regular Legislative session.
Along with work on the budget, lawmakers also anticipate the introduction of a bill supporting gay marriage backed by Governor Christine Gregoire. This session will be the last for Governor Gregoire who has announced she will not run for re-election this fall.
Much of Eastern Washington will be represented at the Legislature by Seventh District Representative Joel Kretz, Seventh District Representative Shelly Short and Seventh District Senator Bob Morton. The Seventh Legislative District encompasses Stevens,Ferry, Pend Oreille and parts of Lincoln County.
