Maxine Matlock, a longtime resident of Colville, passed away on Dec. 3, 2011 in Spokane at the age of 89. She was born on March 30, 1922 in Ryse, Missouri, the daughter of Mathis and Myrtle (Plank) Thomason.
Maxine was raised in Missouri where she also attended school. As a teenager, she met the love of her life, Thomas “Joe” Matlock, and they were married on April 30, 1939 in Salem, MO. They moved to Colville in 1944 with their young children and Maxine devoted most of her time taking care of the needs of her family. In 1962, they moved to Veradale in the Spokane Valley for three years before settling back in Colville in their home. Maxine worked through the years in retail and at several restaurants. In Colville she worked at a bakery and retired from Kohlstedt’s Pharmacy.
Maxine was involved in the community and was a member of the White Lake Grange for 26 years, often selling tickets at the Fairgrounds for the Grange. She always kept busy at home taking care of her family. She loved to sew and quilt for her family. Maxine always had a well- groomed lawn and loved raising flowers and having a great garden. She was very skilled in the kitchen, canning the fruits and vegetables she raised, and always baked fresh bread and made things from scratch. Maxine loved getting away and enjoying picnics with her family at North Gorge Campground. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
