Nicholas “Nick” J. Godes

October 26, 2011

Nicholas “Nick” J. Godes, a 44-year resident of the Colville area, passed away on Oct. 18, 2011. Nick was born on June 11, 1931 in Richardton, ND, the son of Mike and Fillameno “Minnie” (Steiner) Godes.
He attended first grade through third grade in Hawmarth, ND and then moved to Richardton where he finished eighth grade. Nick then began working for local farmers, as well as turning a wrench at the John Deere dealership. On March 19, 1952, he entered the U.S. Army and served overseas in Japan, Okinawa and Korea. He was honorably discharged on March 1, 1954 at Camp Stoneman, CA.
Two years later, Nick married V. Lorraine Stecker on May 22, 1956 in Spokane. In 1961 he began a 34-year career with the Boise Cascade Lumber Company while residing in Spokane. Nick was later transferred to the Kettle Falls mill in March 1967. He retired from Boise Cascade in 1995 and then focused his time on projects around the home. In the spring of 1998, Nick re-entered the workforce as a greeter at Walmart in Colville. Nick’s long-term fight against cancer began in 2000. He fought courageously for 11 years. His deteriorating health required that he retire a “second time” in September 2010.
His tireless energy was an inspiration to his family as they watched him work a full day, maintain his two large gardens, complete the daily chores and make time to socialize. Nick loved his family and supported his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their activities with words of inspi¬ration and his attendance. He loomed over most people with his large frame. He had incredible strength. Yet, his soft demeanor was slow to anger and rich in kindness. He enjoyed fishing, baseball and bowling.
Nick was preceded in death by his brother, Clem Godes.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lorraine Godes, at the home; sons, Ronald Godes, Nampa, ID; Keith Godes, Colville; Kevin Godes and wife, Carol, Colville; Gary Godes and wife, Donna, Northport; Larry Godes and wife, Shari, Baker City, OR; 13 grandchildren,12 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Reinhard Godes and wife, Dolores; Belfield, ND; Erwin Godes and wife, Geraldine, Dickinson, ND; sister, Anna Conlon, Seattle.
