Mustangs get in
games at Kettle

Northport High moved its early-season baseball record to 4-0 last week with a 5-0, 13-4 sweep of host Republic.

The games were played at the junior varsity field at Kettle Falls. The fields at Northport and Republic were still unplayable last week.

The Mustangs won the rain-shortened first game 5-0 behind right-hander Jeremiah Johnson. The junior scattered two hits and struck out seven.

Johnson didn’t throw a ball until there were two outs in the second inning.

Northport managed only five hits, but the Mustangs took advantage of Republic walks and hit by pitch scenarios to get runners aboard often.

Daulton Burke was two for three with a first game triple.

The NHS bats warmed up appreciably in the second game on a cold, wet March day.

Northport’s first four batters, Burke, Brandon Hedrick, Johnson and Josh Konkler combined to go 10 of 15 with two doubles and a pair of triples.

Northport slapped Republic pitching around for 15 hits.

Burke and Hedrick both threw two innings in the second game.

“We are looking better and we fielded the ball well in the doubleheader,” head coach Don Baribault said. “We did make some throwing errors that led to Republic runs. We will need to address that issue as we progress. But I do think that the weather played a role in that.”

NHS was scheduled to play at doubleheader at Kettle Falls last Saturday against Wellpinit and played Wilbur-Creston at Kettle Falls Tuesday before resuming play next week.
