An AARP Smart Driver Class will be offered Thursday and Friday, Oct. 27-28 at the Colville Community Senior Center (also known as The Hub), 231 W. Elep (behind the Copper Bowl and north of Country Chevrolet’s sales lot on Wynne Street).

The classes will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days. Registration is encouraged because the class will be limited to 30 participants on a first come, first served basis. Those interested can register by calling Kevin at The Hub (675-1479) between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Check-in will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, the first day of class. There is a $15 materials fee for AARP members to cover cost of workbooks and handouts. The non-member fee is $20.

Checks written to AARP for the exact amount are preferred, but cash is fine. To receive the membership price, AARP members need to have their membership number’s available at the time of check-in.

The two-day class is designed for driver’s aged 55 and over. Upon completion, participants will receive a discount on their automobile insurance when they provide their respective insurance companies with their completion certificate.

Most insurance companies require a refresher course every two years. However, if anyone has questions about when to take a course to receive a discount, it is best to contact their respective insurance agencies.

Membership in AARP is not required and the class is open to any age driver. But those under the age of 55 may not receive a deduction on their auto insurance.

The course includes suggestions for dealing with normal age-related physical changes that affect driving skill, safety strategies for various driving situations, vehicle equipment, driving aids and information about changes in traffic laws.
