Panorama Juniors shine in desert
The Panorama Juniors U-17 club volleyball season came to an end last week in Phoenix, AZ. The team, comprised of members of the Colville High volleyball team, competed in the 28th annual volleyball festival in the desert. The tournament is the nation’s largest indoor girl’s volleyball event. During opening ceremonies at Chase Field (home of the Arizona Diamondbacks), the Panorama Juniors marched with over 500 teams and 8,000 athletes in all divisions. Honored during opening ceremonies were volleyball greats Misty May-Treanor and Karch Kiraly. Play started in the Phoenix Convention Center on 86 different courts. Fifty-seven teams were in the Juniors U-17 bracket. The Juniors were seeded in the top 32 teams as a result of their prior placing in tournaments during the season. During the tournament’s first three days, the Colville team placed second in pool play. That enabled the Juniors to stay in the top 16 when championship play started on Sunday of tournament week. The Juniors picked up wins over Channel Islands, Ventura, CA; Park Center of Winchester, CA; Kern River, Bakersfield, CA; Coast, San Diego; Mesa, AZ; Arsenal, Upland, CA; T-Street, Irvine, CA; Burlington-Edison (Washington) and Conejo Crush of Thousand Oaks, CA. Their losses were to Selah (Washington), Rancho Valley of Hesperia, CA; the East Valley Juniors of Phoenix; Legacy from Stevenson Ranch, CA, and Cali from Bonsall, CA. The Juniors finished ninth overall, bringing home trophies for the top of the Contender bracket. It was the highest finish by any state of Washington entry in all age divisions. The local club received numerous comments about their team play and support of each other. Team members include sophomores Sadie Learn and Aubrey Buckner; juniors Jessie Glidewell, Jacy Vining, Joellee Buckner and Leanna Carr, and seniors Tasji Urhausen, Erin Little and Ashley Knight. The team is coached by former CHS volleyball standout, Kara Pein.
