Phyllis Diane Schmidt, a lifelong resident of Colville, passed away on Sept. 19, 2012 in Colville at the age of 70. Phyllis was born on March 30, 1942, the daughter of Albert Branch and Clara Belle (Thompson) Williamson. Phyllis was raised and attended school in Colville. Following high school, Phyllis married Glenn Willis Caufield and they began a family. While her three sons, Tim, Rod and Ron, were young, Phyllis opened her heart to other children, operating a day care within her home. As her boys began grade school and junior high, Phyllis began work at Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home. Phyllis and Glenn grew apart and divorced after 19 years together. Quite some time later, Phyllis met and married Keith Schmidt. She and Keith owned and operated K.W. Schmidt Construction. Phyllis assisted with many of the construction duties like painting, drywall, as well as the bookkeeping. She and Keith retired to Arizona where she enjoyed working at a local craft store. Following Keith’s passing, Phyllis returned to Colville. She worked for a time in building maintenance with the Washington State Highway Department and in 1997 began working at Safeway. Phyllis worked in customer service and as the video manager. For eleven years she enjoyed getting to know her customers and sharing her constant motherly care and oversight. Following her retirement in 2008, Phyllis found the freedom and time to expound on her talents as an artist, gardener and grandmother. Phyllis touched the lives of those around her with her wonderful soul, as an articulate artist and as an avid Green Thumb. She is remembered as an incredible mother, grandmother and spirited lady. Her talents as an artist spilled into every home of her family with her paintings, quilts, bracelets, scarves and gifts as a seamstress. Phyllis had “two Green Thumbs” and her bountiful garden harvests gave her the medium to teach her grandchildren how to can fruits and vegetables and enjoy homemade apple butter and jams. Her love and creativity was supreme, as well as, her essence and her special touch, all of which, she left in sur¬rounding hearts. Phyllis was a very strong and inspirational person to all who knew her and in every aspect of life. Phyllis was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Caufield; by her second husband, Keith Schmidt; son, Ron Caufield; brother, Bob Williamson and sister, Mona Williamson. Phyllis is survived by her sons, Tim Caufield and his wife, Tracy; Rod Caufield and wife, Becky; grandchildren, Rod Jr. Caufield and wife, Hannah; Samantha, Shanda, Christina and Glenn Caufield; great-grandchildren, R.J. Caufield and Owen Sundheim; brothers, Albert and Jim Williamson; sisters, Denise Millward and Sharon Finch, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service and potluck will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Fort Colville Grange. Memorial contributions may be given to Colville Kitten Haven, in compliment to Phyllis’s love of animals. Please visit the on-line memorial and sign the guestbook at www.danekasfuneralchapel.com.
