Indians look sharp in beating Cheney

Colville High (6-6, 2-2) took out a few frustrations on Cheney (3-8, 1-4) last Saturday night at home in a 53-35 Great Northern League girl’s basketball win. The win over the Blackhawks was one of the Indians’ best all-around outings of the season and helped take away some of the sting of a pair of GNL losses to West Valley and East Valley during the week.
Colville fell to West Valley 43-32 back on Jan. 8 and dropped a 43-36 decision last Friday to host East Valley after leading by six points and half. The Indians were outscored 17-1 in the third quarter against the Knights.
Colville was at Deer Park (0-12, 0-4) on Tuesday and will entertain Pullman (6-5, 2-1) on Friday. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

An important date on Friday with Pullman

CHS head coach Ray Clark would like nothing better than to pull off a sweep this week after the Indians went 1-2 last week. If his team plays like they did against Cheney, a sweep is a distinct possibility.
“We are starting to play better,” Clark said on Monday. “We’re starting to get after it.”
While Deer Park continues to be the GNL cellar-dweller, Pullman has always had a solid program. The Greyhounds aren’t quite as formidable—or as tall—as they have been in past seasons. PHS, like Colville, is guard-oriented. It’s likely that something will give on Friday night when the ‘Hounds visit.
“Pullman is playing well,” Clark said. “They are a veteran team (seven seniors). That senior class seems like it has been together forever.”
Look for the Indians, with their speed in the backcourt, to pressure Pullman’s guards.
“We’ll work to put pressure on them and, hopefully, wear them down,” Clark said, noting that Jessi Wittmeyer and Malia Luu exacted considerable pressure and a toll on Cheney’s guard rotation last Saturday night.
“They did a very good job of working Cheney’s point guard (Chae Brown),” Clark added. “We need to do that to other point guards…make them work…wear them down.”
In the loss at home to West Valley, Colville struggled with the Eagles’ pressure, particularly in the first half. On Friday at East Valley, Colville didn’t handle the Knights’ half-court trap in the third quarter. And EV didn’t miss much in a very productive quarter.
“That was a very good half-court trap, but it shouldn’t beat you,” Clark said, promising that the Indians would work on pressure in practice sessions this week.
In the loss to West Valley, Erin Higbie led the visitors with a game-high 21 points.
Erin Wallman led East Valley in their comeback win over Colville with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Taryn Main led CHS with 10 points.

Learn hot early

One night later back home, junior Sadie Learn turned in her best offensive outing of the season, hitting several early jump shots to stake the Indians to an early lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Learn finished with 13 points.
Cheney had trouble all night long with Colville’s quickness and full court pressure. The Indians raced to an 18-7 first quarter lead and expanded that to as much as 16 in the second quarter.
ELSEWHERE
In GNL games last Tuesday night, East Valley (10-3, 4-1) downed Cheney, 58-40 on the road behind Hannah Burland’s 11 points and Taylor Morscheck and Jordan Phelan’s 10 apiece.
Coreen Labish had 11 points for Cheney.
Janey Reeves led a balance Clarkston (3-6, 1-1) attack in a 54-17 rout of host Deer Park last Tuesday night.
On Friday, league-leading West Valley (8-4, 4-0) downed Cheney, 58-51, behind Erin Higbie’s 13 points.
Pullman built a 47-4 halftime lead and overwhelmed Deer Park, 61-12 on Friday. Emily Drake led Pullman with 19 points.
In a battle for first place in the GNL on Saturday night, Higbie scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead West Valley to a 52-46 win at East Valley.
It was West Valley’s fourth straight win.
Wallman had 12 points and nine boards for East Valley.
