Sister Mary Esther Becker
Sister Mary Esther Becker, OP, age 92, a resident of Chewelah, passed away on May 14, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Long Term Care in Chewelah. Sister Mary Esther was born on October 16, 1918 in Oberwuerzbach, Germany, the daughter of Alois Becker and Elisabetha Graf.
Sister Mary Esther attended school in Germany and then moved to the United States of America as a young religious. She traveled across the United Stated by train from New York to Kettle Falls. There she made her first profession of vows in 1939 at Our Lady of the Valley Convent. Sister Mary Esther then attended a three-year nursing education at the Sacred Heart Nursing School. She then worked as a registered nurse and CRNA in several of her community hospitals including, St. Martin Hospital in Tonasket, St. Mary’s Hospital in Conrad Montana, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah, and Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville.
For several years, Sister Mary Esther served as an administrator at both St. Joseph’s and Mount Carmel Hospitals. Her longest tenure of service was at Mount Carmel Hospital where she ministered for 33-years and served her final role as a Patient Advocate. Sister Mary Esther retired in 2002 and moved to the Dominican Center in Spokane along with her friend Sister Anna Marie Reger. Due to her gradually deteriorating health, she moved to Kimberly Cottage a care center in Spokane. In May of 2010 she transferred to St. Joseph’s Long Term Care in Chewelah where she has resided for the past year.
Sister Mary Esther was extremely generous and always led with the needs of others ahead of her own. Her hands were never idle, as she prayed, Rosary in hand, with every new step of the day. She cared for others with unparalleled compassion and found a special connection with her dear friend sister Annie and a challenged young man she embraced as her own. Sister Mary Esther also enjoyed knitting, walking and visiting with her many friends.
Sister Mary Esther was preceded in death by her parents and sisters in Germany.
She is survived by her two German Sister companions, Sister Alberta Nett and Sister Fidelis Weber who traveled to the United States with her in 1937, and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany.
