Colville Arts Foundation sponsors workshop
A Dia de los Muertos—Day of the Dead—workshop was held last week. Sponsored by the Colville Arts Foundation, the workshop was led by Los Angeles-based filmmaker, Nancy De Los Santos. De Los Santos helped workshop participants create a memorial to loved ones who have passed on. Traditionally, Mexicans believe that “we should laugh in the face of death and realize that it is part of the life cycle” and take time on Nov. 2 to honor those loved ones, pets or special celebrities who are no longer with us…and celebrate their lives with a fiesta. Workshop participants displayed photographs of their deceased loved ones, along with Cempasuchitl (marigold) flowers, and papel picado (cut paper) to decorate their altars. Ms. De Los Santos also brought authentic Mexican sugar skulls (Calaveras), miniature food, miniature cups, and miniature mocajetes for the altars created. The participants honored their pets and relatives and had a great time doing so.
