Sophomore Casey Cox leads
the way with a third place finish

BY CHRIS COWBROUGH
S-E Sports Editor

Three of Colville High’s six players at Monday’s District 7 qualifier at MeadowWood Golf Course (Liberty Lake) have earned State 2A Tournament berths.
Sophomore Casey Cox earned his second straight State berth, firing an even par 72 to finish the two-day event (the first round was at Chew¬elah Golf & Country Club last Wednesday) with a 150 total.  That was good for third place.
Freshman Drew Cowbrough came back from an 86 and back problems at Chewelah to fire a 78 on Monday for a two-round total of 164 and a 10th place individual finish.
Senior Tyler Borders, like Cox, also will make a return trip to the State tournament.  Borders shot an 81 for a 166 total and tied for 12th.
CHS sophomore Austin Pete came back from an 89 at Chewelah to fire a fine 78 at MeadowWood and tie for 14th at 167.
That total came up just short of getting Pete back to State.
“Austin is the second alter¬nate after conceding the first alternate position to senior Cody Stumph of Riverside,”  noted CHS head coach Tim Gray.

Gesture of sports¬manship on the part of Austin Pete

“I thought that was a very nice gesture on Austin’s part and really reflects a great sense of sportsmanship on his part.”
Colville’s Jackson King fired an 82 for a 169 total and Phil Bateman carded an 87 for a 173.
The Indians finished second in the team District 7 team to¬tals to champion Clarkston.
The team total at Meadow¬Wood was a season-low 392 for the Indians.  That bested their Deer Park Golf Course low by three shots.
Aaron Byrd of Cheney con¬tinued his strong play on Mon¬day by adding a four-under 68 to the 72 he fired at Chewelah (four under par 140).  He is the District 7 medalist.
GNL champion Corey Mey¬ers of Deer Park added a 67 on Monday to the 74 he shot at Chewelah (141).  The senior finished second.
Gray and his three-man contingent will leave for the State 2A Tournament at Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine on Sunday.  The tour¬nament format calls for a practice round on Monday and the first 18-hole tournament round Tuesday.  The second round (after first round cuts) will be played on Wednesday.
    MAKE-UP DATE
The Indians will get some additional practice time on Wednesday when they compete in the twice postponed Deer Park Invitational.
Unlike the previous two Deer Park Invite dates, Wednesday’s weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 70s.
