Colville High 4x100 & 4x200 relay
teams have top 2A marks in state

BY CHRIS COWBROUGH
S-E Sports Editor

After finishing the Great North¬ern League dual meet sea¬son last Thursday at Pullman, the Colville High School track and field team is preparing for the District 7 2A meet Thursday and Friday at Cheney High School.
Events both days will get un¬derway at 3:30 p.m.
At press time, there was an outside chance that the meet might be moved to another site other than Cheney High, possibly to West Valley High School.  But that was a long-shot.
“I can’t imagine at this point that the meet would move,”  fig¬ured CHS head coach Bill Car¬penter on Monday.  He would know the answer to that question by Monday night.
The Indians, who were at Pull¬man for their last Great Northern League meet of the season last Thursday, have several athletes who have a chance to qualify out of District to the State 2A Track & Field meet May 23-24 at Mt. Tahoma High School (Tacoma).

Musson should be ready to go this week

Defending State javelin cham¬pion David Musson hasn’t thrown much this spring.  He’s been nursing (and rehabbing) a sore elbow.
But Musson, one of the top high school javelin throwers in the country, and the best in Washington state, has thrown 189-2 this spring.  His threw 211-10 at the State 2A meet last May.
“And that was at about 75 per¬cent,”  Carpenter said of that 189 and change throw in cool weather earlier this spring.  “He should be ready to go this week…I think he is capable of another 20 feet (from that 189-foot throw).”
With a weather forecast pre¬dicted in the 80s, look for Mus¬son to be able to crank it up.
The Indians’ 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams are tops in the state 2A ranks at this juncture.  The teams are made up of Kelsey and Carly Gauche, Emily Pond and Whitley Luu.
Pond, an outstanding all-around athlete who has excelled in the ring for coach Carpenter’s girl’s team, has pretty much moved exclusively to the sprints and relays.
While he loses a solid scorer in the shot and discus, the sophomore has fit in nicely in those relay legs.
“They are running well to¬gether,”  Carpenter said of his foursome of fleet-footed young ladies.
The 4x100 team has a best of 50.24.  Their 4x200 mark is 1:47.3.
Senior jumper Devin Almas has a chance to advance out of District in three events—the high jump, long jump and triple jump.  He went 42-3 in the triple jump last week and has a 42-10 PR (at last year’s District meet).

Adams has a good shot in the shot—and discus

Brian Adams in the shot (47-3 PR) and discus (147-3) also has an opportunity to advance, along with Sara Lentz in the shot (35-4) and discus (124-10).
Senior Justin Rose, who won last fall’s State 2A cross country title, should be able to qualify in his specialty, the 3200.
Senior Skyler Dumas, one of the top high jumpers in the GNL last season, competed in his first high jump last week at Pullman.  Dumas, hampered by some seri¬ous leg and ankle injuries sus¬tained last fall, plans to give the HJ a shot this week at District.  He’ll also run the 100 and 200.
The top three finishers in each event will advance to the State 2A meet.
