Indians cap perfect GNL season

BY CHRIS COWBROUGH
S-E Sports Editor

Colville High put the finish¬ing touches on a memorable Great Northern League girls’ tennis season last week by beating Riverside, 6-1.  The win assured the league champions of a perfect season.
The Indians will be in Clark¬ston Friday and Saturday for the District 7 2A Tournament.
CHS head coach Phil John¬son, who has built a GNL pow¬erhouse as the only tennis coach in school history, got his first taste of real liquid success after his team had secured the win over Riverside—a cooling ice water bath.
It wasn’t a cooler of Gator¬ade…and Johnson is thankful for that.  The impromptu shower with a Gatorade jug of ice water came courtesy of his apprecia¬tive team.
Unbeaten tennis teams just want to celebrate a little.
“The team pulled off the league championship and our first ever undefeated season,”  Johnson said after it was all over.  “And what thanks did I get?  A Gatorade jug of ice water on my head as I sat gazing over the tennis courts on a sunny afternoon.”
    A cooling gaze it was.
Johnson conceded that the 2008 tennis season “will be one to remember.”  He’s hoping that a trip to Seattle and the State 2A Tournament next week will also be in the offing and create a few more memories.
Qualifying for District are Lentz and Buckner in singles, Brina Smith/Melissa Rhode¬house and Andrea Wal¬ston/Martha Groves in doubles.
    RESULTS
In singles, Abby Lentz downed Mikayla Grant of River¬side, 6-3, 6-0.  CHS No. 2 Melissa Rhodehouse beat Sierra Irvine, 6-0, 6-0 and Colville No. 4 Kodie Yocham downed River¬side’s Molly Beerbohm, 6-1, 6-2.
The only loss was Madeline Michaelson’s 4-6, 2-6 loss to Rhianna McDonald.
In doubles, the Indians swept.  Andrea Walston/Martha Groves downed Jennifer Hunt/Jessica Hogue, 6-1, 6-2; Helen Nelson and Charity Thompson beat Riverside’s Bre¬anna Haver/Kammie McCoul, 6-0, 6-2 and Jessica Flower and Ashley Buckner won a 6-0, 3-0 forfeit.
