Gonzaga-bound Goodwin breaks
CHS track records in long, triple jumps

BY CHRIS COWBROUGH

When the State 1B track and field championships unfold next week at Woodard Field on the campus of Eastern Washington University, it will be the prover¬bial swan song for one of the best all-around athletes to ever compete at Northport High School.
Kaprina Goodwin, who has excelled at volleyball, basketball and track & field during her ex¬emplary career at NHS, will be looking for a four-event sweep next week.  The Gonzaga Uni¬versity-bound Goodwin turned the trick last year at State in her junior season.
Goodwin accomplished the first step of that return to EWU last Saturday by winning all four events (100 meter hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and tri¬ple jump) at the Panorama League Championship at Colville High School.
Goodwin re-established three records in Colville—she broke her previous 100-meter hurdles record of 15.4 with a run of 15.34.  In the long jump, the lanky Goodwin leaped 17-5, adding five inches to her previ¬ous record.  She set another mark with a 35-11 mark in the triple jump.  Her previous league record was 35-1.
In the long jump pit, Colville High track and field coach Bill Carpenter pointed out to Good¬win, who is headed to GU to play volleyball, that an 18-foot leap is well within reach.  Changing her timing could get her there.
In the 300 hurdles, Goodwin finished a dominating perform¬ance with a time of 46.84.
NHS freshman Shyanne Wil¬son placed second at the league meet on Saturday in the discus (79- ½), was fourth in the triple jump (27-11) and was eighth in the long jump (12-9).  She ad¬vances to district in all three events.
Shawn Steele of NHS ad¬vanced to the District on Tues¬day at Spokane Falls Commu¬nity College by taking fourth in the triple jump (37-7.5), sixth in the high jump (4-10) and sixth in the long jump (17-10).
Centered Israel, another NHS freshman, needed PRs to ad¬vance to District and did just that.  He placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.14) and the long jump (16-1.5) . He also ad¬vanced to District in the 110 hurdles and the triple jump.
Lyle Mangis took seventh in the 100 meters with a PR of 12.12.  He also competed at District in the shotput.  Tien Zemelka advanced in the dis¬cus, javelin and triple jump.
In the Panorama League Junior High meet, Northport seventh-grader Kassie Gug¬lielmino turned a few heads with her performance on the CHS track.
The youngster won all three of her events in dominating fashion.  Guglielmino won the 100 meters (13.07 seconds) and the 200 meters (28.25).  She was also first in the long jump (13-3).
Kenny Kelly was fourth in the discus sixth in the long jump. Josh York brought home fifth place and turned in PRs in both of his running events.  His 200 meter PR was 31.03 sec¬onds.  His 400 PR  time was 69.7.
Marissa Gilmore placed fourth in the javelin.
