Scoping meeting on management plan for Lake Roosevelt NRA Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 September 2008

Meeting will be held Sept. 9
At local community college

The National Park Service is beginning development of a Shoreline Management Plan for Lake Roosevelt National Recrea¬tion Area.
“Development of the plan of¬fers both the NPS and the public an opportunity to produce a comprehensive, long-range vi¬sion for management of the area,”  commented Superinten¬dent, Debbie Bird.
The 2001 General Manage¬ment Plan for Lake Roosevelt established overall strategies for meeting the general goals and purposes of Lake Roosevelt, Bird said.
“Since that time, other man¬agement issues have surfaced that are not adequately ad¬dressed in the GMP, including the increase in private develop¬ment along the shoreline, crowding of existing facilities, beach camping, and disposal of human waste,”  Bird explained.  “The Shoreline Management Plan will tier from the goals and objectives established by the GMP and provide for the level of detail needed to address these and other issues yet to be fully identified by the National Park Service and the public.”
Bird said that the first phase of the public involvement proc¬ess, called “scoping,” a concept designed to help identify a “management vision” and high¬light what topics the public feels are most important to future management of the recreation area, will start next month.
“A great plan requires public involvement early and often in the process,”  the superinten¬dent said.
Four scoping workshops have been scheduled around the region to assist the public in learning more about the process and the issues the plan is ex¬pected to address.
“The meetings will be held in an open house format and park service representatives will be available to facilitate discussion and comments about the issues the Shoreline Management Plan should cover.
The scoping workshop in Colville will be held Monday, Sept. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Community Colleges of Spo¬kane-Colville Center at 985 S. Elm St. in Colville (please use east entrance).
Written comments can be submitted at the scoping meet¬ing or by mail to National Park Service, 1008 Crest Drive, Cou¬lee Dam, WA 99116.  They can also be faxed to (509) 633-9332 or sent via email to http://parkplanning.nps.gov/parkHome.cfm?parkId=318.
Comments must be post¬marked no later than Sept. 30, 2008.
