Kettle’s Garrett Anderson finished second at 106 pounds; Kyle Hyde, fourth at 132, and fifth place went to Dan Kearney (152) and Jacob Walsh (138).
“The wrestling was intense,” KFHS head coach Joe Kerns said of his team’s showing at Riverside. “The matches Dan (Kearney) lost were by one point and in overtime.”
Kerns said that Kearney went for a throw at the end “and got rolled through for a tough loss.”
Vining recorded the fastest pin in the tournament (a five second standing Cradle in his semifinal win).
Kerns’ said that Anderson’s first round match was particularly satisfying.
“Another team had moved their wrestlers on the bracket in an attempt to improve their shot at being able to wrestle in the championships,” the coach related. “Their non-scoring wrestler ended up placing higher than the one that had been moved to our side of the bracket.”
In a league match-up in late December at Lake Roosevelt High School, Anderson lost to his Kittitas opponent and Lindsey Olvera (112 pounds) won by decision over her Lake Roosevelt opponent. At 132 pounds Hyde lost to his Kittitas opponent and Spensor Ridenour picked up a win over his opponent from Lake Roosevelt.
Kearney picked up wins over Brewster and Pateros wrestlers at 152 pounds and lost a close match to his Liberty Bell opponent.
Austin Anderson dropped his match against his Lake Roosevelt opponent, and Vining picked up wins against Republic and Lake Roosevelt at 195 pounds. The junior then wrestled up a weight class and lost to his opponent from Pateros.
Kettle Falls will travel to Tonasket on Saturday for the Apple Pie Tournament. Wrestling gets started at 10 a.m.
The Bulldogs will host Springdale and Wellpinit on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Kettle Falls High School. Wrestling gets underway at 6 p.m.
The Northeast 2B (Bi-County) League meet will be Saturday, Jan. 28 at Republic. The league tournament will be hosted by Lake Roosevelt on Feb. 4.
The Bulldogs have been hampered by illness and injury to date.
“That has been an issue,” Kerns admitted. “But we hope to put together a good showing up at Tonasket. The kids are starting to peak at the right time of the year.”
