Buckhorn Mine in Ferry County will close

REPUBLIC – The closure of the Buckhorn Mine near Chesaw will be detrimental to the economies of both Okanogan and Ferry counties.
That was the message delivered to the Legislative Committee on Economic Development and Lt. Gov. Brad Owen earlier this month. The state officials were in town to discuss the economic impact of closure.
The mine employs 230 people and 130 contractors.

Ebola Virus: Precautions in place

There are no patients with Ebola in Washington state, and there are no plans to evacuate patients to the region in the near future, according to state health officials.
There are also no suspected cases and no one is being monitored, health officials say.
That said, Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, local hospitals and local health officials are ready.

16-year-old Chewelah singer debuts album this Saturday

There are very few children that know their passion from an early age, and even a few that follow it into their teenage years. Local independent artist, Savannah Blain, is one of those few. The 16-year-old has just released her debut EP album, Along the Way.
“It’s one of the most raw states of being,” Blain says about songwriting. “You’re sharing a personal experience with every lyric.”

Colville local wins title at Clogging Nationals

Hannah Johnson recently returned from clogging Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee where she won the 2014 title for her Choreographed Solo and also earned a place on the NCHC 2014 All-Star team.
Over the next 12 months, Johnson will perform with the all-star team in various places starting in Reno, Nevada. Hannah has competed in several regional competitions, including Charleston, South Carolina, Branson, Missouri, and Scottsdale, Arizona. In all of the Regional competitions, she placed in the top three in most of her events, qualifying for Nationals in Branson.
