Halfway house comes to Colville

A new halfway house for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction is opening its doors in Colville. Located across from Providence Mount Carmel Hospital on Columbia Street, the house was purchased by Barry and Shelley Bacon. The couple is renting the house to Oxford House, Inc.

"There's nothing like it that I know of in the Tri-County area," said Dr. Barry Bacon, who volunteers to work with drug addicts in the Stevens County jail. "It's a chance to try and help people and save the taxpayers' money."

Homeless in Colville

Last winter’s relative heat wave was a blessing for Romlyn Conn, 63, a homeless resident of Colville. Conn is easy to spot: her ducks faithfully waddle alongside her and her well-behaved dog, Harvey. She fondly regards her little family as her “traveling petting zoo.” Conn figures she walks around six miles a day, passing the time until she finds a spot to spend the night. After 33 years with her former roommate, it was a decidedly unfriendly parting that launched Conn on her current path of being homeless.

Kettle Falls Police searching for robbery suspect

Law enforcement is searching for the suspect who robbed a Kettle Falls coffee stand on Tuesday, May 26. According to Kettle Falls Police Chief Chris Courchene, the robbery occurred at approximately 2:09 p.m. when a male dressed all in black and wearing a ski mask with a skull face entered Ms. B's Haven at Hwy. 395 320 E. Third, and demanded money from the till. The employee that was on shift told police the suspect was skinny with brown eyes and brandished a double-sided dagger with a dark handle.
