Vernon John Hills passed away July 18, 2011 in Wenatchee. Vern was born to Joe and Olga Hills on Nov. 11, 1929 on Kelly Hill. Following the death of his mother, he resided with his grandmother in Orient.
After a childhood in Orient, Vern enlisted in the United States Army, serving overseas in the Korean Conflict, where he received a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged of his duties.
After returning home, Vern settled in Spokane, where he began his career as a machinist, working for Bitco/Kaman Bearing. He later moved to the Colville area and drove log truck. He then moved back to Spokane and worked for Warden Hydraulics before retiring in Wenatchee.
Vern was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn; by his grandson, Cody Payne; brothers, Jack, Warren and George Hills, and by his sister, Winnie Kessinger.
He is survived by his wife, Charleen, and his six children: Jeanette Hills, Spokane; Betsy (Steve) Olson, Spokane; Tamara (Allen) Payne, Kelly Hill; John (Sandy) Hills, Buckley; Yvonne (John) Hoff, Spokane; and James (Rena) Hills, Davenport; also by his brother, Russell Hills, Grass Valley, CA; sisters, Billie Wiley, Northport, and Pug Lavin, Sequim. Vern had five stepchildren: Jim (deceased); (Linda) Thorndike, Yakima; Scott Thorndike, Oroville; Yvonne (Ron) McDougall, Oroville; Sheryl (Wayne) Pretts, Wenatchee; and Daryl Thorndike, Yakima. Vern was blessed with 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday August 6 at 1 p.m. in Wenatchee. The service will be held at the Wenatchee Community Center, 504 S. Chelan Avenue.
