Elsa May Godfrey, age 89, formerly of Northport and Spokane Valley, passed away on August 21, 2011 at Montgomery, Texas, in the home of her eldest son. Elsa was born at Glenns Ferry, Idaho, on July 31, 1922, the second child of Jefferson Franklin Midkiff and Mahala Elizabeth (Jones) Midkiff.
On Sept. 18, 1942, she married Elmer Grant Godfrey, a farmer, in Northport. After Elmer’s death in 1971, she moved to what is now Spokane Valley, where she worked many years as a cook.
Elsa loved to read, travel, attend family reunions, and go camping and hiking, which she referred to as “communing with nature.” Her extended family was precious to her, and she was dearly loved by her grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her “Auntie.”
She is survived by her sons, Daniel Grant and wife Linda, Montgomery, Texas, and David Allen and wife Carla, Jamestown, North Dakota; grandchildren, Grant Godfrey of Takoma Park, Maryland; Craig Godfrey, of Oakland, California, Collin and Glynna Godfrey, Jamestown, North Dakota; and sisters Meryl and husband Richard Ropp, Spokane; Donna and husband Gary Ropp, Lolo, Montana, and Jean Bryant, Spokane.
Elsa was preceded in death by her father and mother; her older brother, James Franklin Midkiff, and by her husband, Elmer.
She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved Elmer in Mountain View Park Cemetery, Colville, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17.
