To recap the week in sports for the Cougars last week, unbeaten Northwest Christian (5-0) downed Chewelah’s boys 79-56 on Saturday in Colbert.
NWC post Kwinn Hanson went off for 37 points on 16 of 22 shooting.
Ben Johnstone led Chewelah with 17 points.
The Crusaders used big first and third quarters to beat Chewelah. The hosts outscored the Cougars 22-13 in the first quarter and 24-14 in the third quarter.
Derek Smith and Caleb Wiebe both scored 12 points apiece for Chewelah.
On Friday at home, Johnstone scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter and Chewelah (3-2) came from behind to register a 55-52 win over visiting Medical Lake last Friday night.
Johnstone was hot outside, hitting five of eight three-pointers. He also pulled down nine rebounds.
Chewelah was outscored 20-12 in the first quarter and trailed by nine points at halftime. But the Cougars outscored the Cardinals (1-4) 33-21 in the second half.
Kendyl Dunn had 15 points and Adam Paulson added 14 more for ML.
Derek Smith added 14 points for Chewelah.
Chewelah started a busy week by pulling a rare basketball oddity, holding an opponent scoreless in the second half. The Cougars ran past Republic 70-14 and held the winless Tigers scoreless after intermission.
Johnstone scored 22 points and teammates Derek Smith and Andrew Pugh combined for 22 points.
Chewelah outscored Republic 29-0 in the second half.
It was a tough week for the Chewelah girls.
The Cougars fell to visiting Republic 40-36 as Brianna Brown and Alysa Stout scored 11 points apiece for the Tigers.
Chewelah was led by Brittney Wuesthoff with 11 points.
On Friday in Chewelah (1-4), Medical Lake downed the Cougars 50-38 for their first win of the season.
Sabrina Earl scored 16 points to lead the Cardinals.
Katelyn Garner led Chewelah with 13 points. Wuesthoff added 10 more.
On Saturday at Northwest Christian, Chewelah was held scoreless in the first and third quarters and fell 46-6 to the Crusaders (4-1).
Chanel Knight led NWC with 13 points.
