Northport has no answers
for hot-shooting Redskins
Wellpinit (16-5) can out firing on all cylinders last Saturday night in the championship game of the Panorama Tournament at Kettle Falls Middle School.
The Redskins dominated inside and outside against cold-shooting Northport (17-3), bolting to a 21-7 first quarter lead and stretching that to 43-14 at halftime.
Game, set match.
Northport managed to outscore Wellpinit 15-11 in the third quarter, but the Runnin’ Redskins outscored NHS 19-5 in the fourth quarter.
This game bore absolutely no resemblance to the escape Wellpinit had to make just days earlier in a narrow road win over the Mustangs.
Greg Wynecoop hit nine of 13 from the field and scored 18 points to go with 14 rebounds. Brodie Ford added 16 more for Wellpinit, who heads into this week’s Northeast District 1B Tournament as top seed.
Northport was led by Freddie Verghaeghe’s 12 points. Jeremiah Johnson added nine for NHS.
Wellpinit will open the tournament with a first round game at home Tuesday night (6 p.m.) against the winner of the Wilbur-Creston (5-14) vs. Columbia (5-14) game on Monday night.
Northport, the Panorama League’s second seed, will host Odessa-Harrington (12-8) on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
In the game for third and fourth seeds earlier Saturday afternoon at Kettle Falls, Cusick (10-11) beat Selkirk (9-13) 70-53 behind Alec Bluff’s 19 points.
Bluff was 15 of 18 at the free throw line.
Marshall Rankin added 12 points for Cusick, who claimed the third seed to the district tournament and will open Tuesday at Almira/Coulee-Hartline (17-3). Game time is 6 p.m.
Selkirk draws Bi-County 1B champion Valley Christian (17-2) in their road opener on Tuesday (6 p.m.).
Dominic Cain led Selkirk with 15 points.
The double elimination tournament will continue for the boys on Saturday with first round winner’s games and loser-out contests.
