Helen Marie Behrens, a longtime resident of the Kelly Hill area near Barstow, passed away in Spokane at the age of 85. Helen was born on April 25, 1927 in Marcus, the daughter of Elbert Glen and Julia Margaret (Anderson) Delp.
Helen was raised and attended school in Marcus. While in school, Helen participated in school sports, excelling on the basketball team. Due to the great distance from the ranch to town, Helen boarded in the Marcus community, helping with laundry, sewing, and caretaking of the homes in which she stayed. She graduated in 1945 from Marcus High School and a few months following graduation, Helen married John Edwin Behrens on Sept. 7. They began a family and settled onto the family farm on Kelly Hill.
Helen assisted with the needs of the ranch and cared for the home. She was a very gifted seamstress, often making clothing from a picture and always lending a “mending” hand to family and friends. She quilted for untold hours and always kept her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren warm with her gifting of quilts. Helen tended to their family garden as needed and canned much of the local harvest to carry them through winter. Enjoyment for Helen was most often found nose deep in one of the countless books she read.
Her offering of love toward her family was endless and her motherly nature was abundantly felt by all. Helen was a gentle spirit with a deep compassion for others. Her hope was to always let other’s know that they were important and worth remembering. She did this through the thousands of birthday cards and letters sent. Her love for others will be long remembered and cherished.
Helen was preceded in death by her son, Dale Behrens; brothers, Ted, Ken, Bill, Bob and Dick; sisters, Lola, Annie and Grace.
Helen was survived by her son, Jack Behrens and wife, Janet, Spokane; daughter, Susan Graff, Spokane; son, Dennis Behrens and wife, Diana, Kelly Hill; 10 grandchildren, 29 great- grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Lewis Delp and his wife, Kathy, Kettle Falls; Jim Delp, Pomeroy; two sisters, Mary Sletten and her husband, Ray, Chattaroy; Linda Shaw and her husband, Buck, Kettle Falls; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
