Local businessman and one of the Colville community’s most loyal supporters, John Patrick Acorn, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sept. 23, 2012. John was born on Jan. 11, 1943 in Colville to Helen and Archie Acorn. He graduated from Colville High School in 1961. John had a happy childhood, spending summers at the family cabin on the Little Pend Oreille Lakes. He and his brothers never missed the first day of fishing. John loved swimming and riding his horse. He also loved playing football in high school. John attended college at Pasco until he figured out that he wasn’t big enough to play college football. John kept in contact with his classmates for the next 50 years, organizing reunions. His business was always the hub of information for everyone. John owned and operated the Acorn Beer Distributorship for many years. John was always happy to sponsor local teams for Babe Ruth baseball, softball, bowling, or share his warehouse space with the Volunteer Food & Resource Center for the cheese distribution in the 1980s. If it was a worthwhile project, John was all for it. John had two previous marriages to the mothers of his children. He opened the Acorn Saloon in 1986 and married wife Jeanie in 1987. John was devoted to his community and worked tirelessly on projects that benefited us all. His activities through the years included the Colville Rodeo, Colville Jaycees, Colville Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, preserving the cross on Colville Mountain, Colville 2000, and many, many hours spent with Colville Pet Rescue…to just name a few. John, who served in the National Guard, really enjoyed golf and spending time with his golfing buddies. John was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Helen Acorn; by his brother, William Acorn; and by his son, Brian Acorn. He is survived by his wife, Jeanie, at the home in Colville; a brother, Robert Acorn and wife Jen, Merrimac, MA; sons Scott Acorn, Colorado; Shane Acorn and wife Bonnie, Colville; daughters Melody Carpenter and husband Chance, Colville; Shawna Wicker and husband Gordon, Spokane; step-daughter, Laure Simpson and husband Dale; grandchildren, Nick, Luke, Janae, Aaron, Levi, Drew, Spencer, Gavin and Gracie, and by several cousins. Graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m., at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. A memorial gathering will follow at the Acorn Saloon from 1 to 4 p.m. Danekas Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
