Indians share GNL dual championship
It’s post-season time for high school wrestlers in Washington state. Fourth-ranked Colville High, who moved up to the class 2A Great Northern League from the Northeast A in the fall, made their return foray into the GNL a successful one with a league dual co-championship (with East Valley).
The Indians’, who would be the odds-on favorite to win a 1A championship if they were still members of the NEA, suffered a lone dual loss this winter to five-time defending State 2A champion Deer Park.
The Stags will be favored on Friday and Saturday when the GNL’s wrestlers move to East Valley High School for the annual District 2A Tournament. At stake will be berths to the Feb. 8-9 regional against the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) at Ellensburg High School.
CHS head coach Randy Cloke was unavailable for comment.
Colville, Deer Park and East Valley will dominate Friday and Saturday’s District tournament. Among the top seeds will likely be Colville 182-pounder Chandler Knight and 145-pounder Trenton Welton.
CHS prepped for this week’s District meet by beating visiting Clarkston 51-27.
The wrestling match against Clarkston also included a first—back-to-back basketball games earlier in the day between CHS and the Bantams. The “triple play” marked the first time in memory that Colville has hosted a league school in boy’s and girl’s basketball—and wrestling on the same day.
