Donald Roderick Carson, Sr., a longtime resident of Inchelium, passed away on March 18, 2013 in Inchelium at the age of 82. Don was born on May 21, 1930 in Hunters, the son of Christopher and Gloris (Pichette) Carson.
He attended school in Inchelium and at the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR. Don completed his high school education in Inchelium and then entered the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army as a communications specialist and was honorably discharged in 1955. Don returned to Inchelium and began his family.
In 1957, Don met Eileen Bailey and together they opened their home to numerous children as well as expanding their own family. Don worked in the timber industry for several years and then moved to Seattle in 1963. There, he worked for a galvanizing plant until his return in Inchelium in 1969. Eileen and Don were married on April 30, 1972 in Coeur d’Alene, ID. Don worked with the 4-H Extension Program prior to 1980, when he began a four-year term as a councilman for the Colville Confederated Tribe. He then returned to logging, working for a time with the River Rats, and retiring at the age of 62.
Don always enjoyed participating and supporting Inchelium athletic programs. He was proud of his ability to play football at the age of 67 and softball until he was 72. Don also enjoyed time in the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting. He always had an open door policy for kids in need and loved to spend time with his numerous grandchildren. Don will be remembered as a strong disciplinarian with a big loving heart and thoughtful character.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Steven and Michael Carson in 1989; six brothers, Thomas “Manny” in 1992, John “Jack” Carson in 1989, Virgil “Butch” Carson, George “Cobb” Carson, Sam Carson, Eugene Carson; three sisters, Julia Woodward, Babe and Cecelia.
Don is survived by his wife, Eileen Carson, at the home; daughters, Sharon Boyd and husband, Lanny, Inchelium, Diana Seymour, Electric City, WA, Marlene Flett and husband, Michael, Ford, Donna Hubert and husband, Ron, Ford, WA, Jackie Carson, Inchelium, Lynette Wulff and husband, Duston, Spokane; three sons, Allen Carson, Inchelium, Willard Carson, Spokane, Donald Carson, Inchelium, 60 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
The celebration of life for Mr. Donald R. Carson began with a Rosary and Vigil on Thursday, March 21 followed by the Funeral Mass on Friday, March 22, both at the Inchelium High School. The graveside service will follow the Funeral Mass at the Hall Creek Cemetery, Inchelium, Father Jake Morton as celebrant.
