heads to Indy
Colville Junior High School and Basement Boys’ wrestling standout TJ Baun will be busy this month with regional and national tournaments.
Baun and his father Tom left Colville on June 4 for the Schoolboy/Girl National Duals in Indianapolis, Indiana. That tournament will run June 5-9 at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis.
Baun, age 14, and an eighth-grader at CJHS, will be competing in his first national duals (Freestyle/Greco) as a member of Team Washington. He’ll be wrestling in the 98- pound class.
The youngster, who will be a freshman at Colville High School in the fall, concedes that he’s both nervous and excited about the opportunity.
“It’s definitely the biggest tournament I have ever been in,” Baun said last week of the national tournament in Indiana. “I am excited to go. I don’t know how I will do, but I don’t think I’ll do badly. All I can do is my best. When I do my best, I wrestle well.”
Baun will be part of a strong Washington contingent of from 22 to 25 wrestlers. In the past three national Schoolboy/Girl tournaments, the Washington team has been ranked in the top eight nationally.
Baun will be in the field at the USA/Cliff Keen West Kids and Cadet Regional Championships in Pocatello, Idaho June 16-22.
The following week (June 24-26), the youngster, who won both Greco and Freestyle state titles this winter, will be in the field of the ASICS Kids Freestyle/Greco Roman National Championships at Orem, Utah.
Baun, who says he would like to wrestle collegiately for a D-1 program eventually, is appreciative of all the support he has received to date. At the top of the list of supporters are his parents, Tom and Lori. He also appreciates the support he’s received from the Basement Boys wrestling club, Booth & LaDuke Motors, Robin and Kathie Nelson, Monty and Shelly Jones and the Opie/Coxie Foundation.
