Marguerite Coral Elgie passed away in Colville on Dec. 17, 2013. She was born on August 17, 1919 in Daisy, the daughter of Albert and Beryl (Horton) Frase.
Marguerite was delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Joseph Horton. When Marguerite was three-months-old, her family was living in a duplex, Albert’s brother, Ernest and his family lived in the other unit.
In 1923, when Marguerite was four-years-old, the Frase family moved to Okanogan County. They had two wagons each pulled by two horses loaded with the family’s belongings--a Hack pulled by one horse driven by her grandma Frase, and a trail herd of around 20 head of cattle. It took the family nearly three weeks to get from Stevens County to Okanogan County and they settled in the south half of the Colville Indian Reservation near Omak Lake.
Marguerite had two nicknames in her life, ‘Swede” when she was younger because she was very blonde, and “Peg” or “Peggy” when she was older.
The family made several moves within Okanogan County and Peg graduated from Omak High School in 1937. After graduating from high school, she worked as a telephone operator for a time.
In 1941, Peg married Ralph Elgie of Okanogan. He had two children, Donna and James. In 1950, Peg’s maternal grandmother, Alice Horton, was widowed at the age of 77. It was time for her to retire and move into town, so she sold the Horton Homestead to Ralph and Peg. After Peg’s beloved husband passed away, she bought a small place, 2 ½ miles from Colville. She resided there until her death. In her spare time, Peg loved to knit; she must have made hundreds of sweaters, socks, scarves, slippers, hats and afghans. She also attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Colville.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, both of her step-children; her parents, one sister, and her brother.
She is survived by her sisters, Virginia St. Peter; Eatonville; Effie Lea Wilson, Riverside; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Marguerite was held on Dec. 29 at the Colville Seventh Day Adventist Church, followed by a graveside service Dec. 30 at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville.
Danekas Funeral Chapel & Crematory was entrusted with the arrangements.
