John D. Steele, a lifelong resident of Fruitland, passed away on Feb.24, 2014 at the age of 82. He was born on March 28, 1931 to James and Mildred (Campbell) Steele in Hunters.
John attended school in Hunters, where he graduated from Columbia High School in 1949. After high school, he attended State College of Washington (known today as Washington State University) and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He married his sweetheart Blanche on July 5, 1953 in Opportunity.
During college, John was in the ROTC program and then entered the United States Air Force. While there, he took up leather working and started making belts, along with purses. John enjoyed time off from running the family farm with trips to the lake to pull the kids around behind the boat. He has always enjoyed fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, playing the slot machines, and being a volunteer firefighter.
John also loved spending time with his grandchildren. He liked to show them how to machine embroidery. They would make towels and other gifts for friends and family members. One of John’s favorite pastimes was picking huckleberries, which he later enjoyed in a pie. He was a 4-H leader and enjoyed spending time with his children at local fairs. John also was a bus driver, member of the school board and a 60-year member of the Enterprise Grange.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Steele.
John is survived by his daughter, Kathy Hahn and her husband Mike, Lake Stevens; his son, John Steele and his wife, Denise, Hunters; his sister, Verna Dubois, Spokane; five grandchildren, Ashley Hahn, Derek Hahn, John R. Steele, Jessica Steele and Jeff Gibson; two great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Izabella Gibson.
The funeral service for Jack Steele will be Saturday, March 8 starting at 11 a.m. at the Hunters First Presbyterian Church, followed by a graveside service at the Greenwood Cemetery in Hunters.
