Last Tuesday at about 6:10 p.m., a Stevens County Detective responded to 2461 Scott Rd, in Rice on a disturbance call.
According to reports, when the detective, identified as Dwayne Johnson, arrived at the Scott Road address, an adult male suspect immediately opened fire with a shotgun as the detective exited his vehicle. The detective was hit in the hand and ear, but was able to return fire.
Johnson returned fire and killed the man.
Johnson told a Spokane television station that he was fired on by a man with a shotgun several times when he responded to a neighbor’s home where someone was trying to kick in the door.
The deceased man may have fired at least one round through the door.
The detective was treated and released at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville.
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (S.I.R.R.) responded to investigate the shooting. The managing agency in this investigation is the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Spokane County Sheriff's Department Deputy Craig Chamberlin, it is common procedure for a separate law enforcement entity to investigate a case when there is an officer-involved shooting.
Additional information will be released as the investigation continues, and the Stevens County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the suspect.
