Michael “Mike” Lawrence Hofmeister, a lifetime resident of Evans, passed away on May 5, 2014 in Colville at the age of 86. Mike was born on May 1, 1928 on the family farm in Evans, the son of Lawrence and Barbara (Epp) Hofmeister.
He was raised on the farm and attended grade school in Bossburg. He completed his education at the old Marcus High School and graduated in 1946. Mike then worked in the local quarry for U.S. Gypsum Company.
His roots grew deep on the family farm, though occasionally he worked off of the farm to support his family. Mike was a farmer from birth. His work off of the farm included construction, including construction of Northport High School, Grange Insurance sales, ownership and operation of the Union 76 bulk plant in Colville, and rural mail carrier service.
Throughout all of his work opportunities, Mike always returned home to tend to the needs of his family and farm alongside of his wife Evelyn. His life began on the farm where he was raised, where he raised his family, and the only place he ever lived and called home. For this, he was both proud and grateful.
Mike’s greatest sense of daily accomplishment and value stemmed from his work as a cattleman. He was very dedicated to instilling the value of a long day’s work into his children and guided them with antidotal wisdom and a firm character. He gave great attention to the needs of his cattle and the care of his canine companions. He also enjoyed visit¬ing with friends, fishing, tending his garden, and watching sports. Mike had a great wit and complimenting sense of hu¬mor. His intellect and generous heart was offered to his family as well as others who had come upon hard times.
Mike was a member of the Stevens County Weed Board, Evans Gun Club, Stevens County Cattleman’s Associa¬tion and was a charter member of the Upper Columbia Hereford Asso¬ciation.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Hofmeister, and by his sisters, Mary Hofmeister, Tresa Cook and Bar¬bara Hartle.
Mike is survived by his daughters, Mary Peterson and husband, Leo, Bossburg; Tresa Hendricks and husband, Fenton, Colville; Lauren Schebor and husband, Rob, Spokane; Laura Brouillard and husband, Ray, Cheney; Michael Quade and his wife Debra, Spokane; grandchildren, Leo, Cody, Ryan, Firni¬chie, Marty, Lesa, Robert, Lori, Tabatha, Michael Jr., Kelly, Lacey, and Kasey; 17 grandchildren and three great- grandchil¬dren.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held May 21 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catho¬lic Church in Kettle Falls. The graveside service and vault interment followed at the Calvary Cemetery in Colville (Father Daniel Barnett celebrant).
