

Chewelah, Kettle Falls Notch Several District Champions

Chewelah and Kettle Falls track and field athletes turned in several state-qualifying performances at the 2B District 6 Championships held May 21 and May 23 at Whitworth University’s Pine Bowl. Chewelah senior Emmitt Warren VIII led the Cougars with a sweep of the boys distance races. Warren won the 800 meters in a personal-best 1 minute, 55 seconds, then added district titles in the 1,600 in 4:24.40 and the 3,200 in a personal-best 9:44.56. Teammate Justice Whittekiend also qualified in multiple events, placing third in the 800 meters in a personal-best 1:59.05, second in the 1,600 in 4:24.83, and fourth in the 3,200 in 10:03.07. Francis Sety gave Chewelah another district title, winning the boys 400 meters in a personal-best 51.09. Sety also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 138 feet, 1 inch, third in the triple jump at 40 feet, 5.5 inches, and fifth in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches. Daniel Jones won both ambulatory events for Chewelah, taking first in the 100 meters in a personal-best 20.52, and winning the ambulatory javelin at 52 feet, 4 inches. AJ Kent placed fourth in the boys pole vault at 11 feet, 8 inches, and sixth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 41 feet, 3 inches. Kent also ran 11.83 in the 100 preliminaries and 23.80 in the 200 preliminaries. Chewelah’s boys also saw Meirahn Waford-Nimmons qualify with a seventh-place finish in the 110 hurdles in 17.05 after running a personal-best 15.77 in the preliminaries. The Cougars’ boys 4x100 relay team of Kaedon Mendez, Deon Richardson, Titan Tapia, and Waford-Nimmons placed seventh in 47.26. Titan Tapia added an 11th-place finish in the triple jump at a personal-best 36 feet, 11.25 inches. Kettle Falls senior Owen Rosenthal won the boys javelin district championship with a throw of 138 feet, 9 inches. Josh Bair placed seventh in the javelin with a personal-best 121 feet, 3 inches, while Sam Lotze was sixth in the discus at a season-best 122 feet, 7 inches, and 16th in the shot put at 30 feet, 4 inches. Rosenthal also placed 14th in the shot put at 38 feet, 2.5 inches. Mason Reeves led Kettle Falls in the boys sprints and jumps, placing eighth in the 400 meters in 55.60 after running a personal-best 55.02 in the preliminaries. Reeves also placed eighth in the long jump at a personal-best 18 feet, 6 inches, and seventh in the triple jump at a personal-best 37 feet, 11 inches. The Kettle Falls boys 4x100 relay team placed eighth in 51.13, while the 4x400 relay team of Deaver Liam, Charles Kelly, Troy Benwell and Josh Bair placed eighth in 4:16.60. On the girls side, Chewelah’s Rin Parsons won the 400 meters in 1:01.67 and added runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200. Parsons placed second in the 100 meters in a personal-best 12.93 and second in the 200 in a season-best 26.68. Marianne Thomason placed third in both the 100 in a personal-best 13.07 and the 200 in a personal-best 26.76. The Chewelah girls 4x200 relay team of Thomason, Faith Knight, Liberty Whittekiend, and Parsons placed second in 1:50.57 to qualify for state. Whittekiend also placed fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 34 feet, 4.5 inches, sixth in the 400 meters in a personal-best 1:04.43, and sixth in the long jump at 15 feet, 6 inches. Chewelah also had strong distance finishes from Josie Carter, who placed sixth in the 3,200 meters in a personal-best 12:57.96, and eighth in the 1,600 in 5:49.19. Elise Warren placed 10th in the 3,200 in 13:20.27, and 12th in the 1,600 in a personal-best 5:57.76. Diana Durhum was 15th in the 1,600 meters with a personal-best 6:04.59. Mei Parsons placed eighth in the 800 in a personal-best 2:38.77 and eighth in the 400 in 1:09.94. Anna Whittekiend placed 11th in the girls pole vault at 7 feet, and 13th in the javelin at 77 feet, 4 inches. Faith Knight placed 11th in the triple jump at 29 feet, 2.25 inches, and 16th in the long jump at 12 feet, 11 inches. Jessika Davis placed 18th in the long jump at 11 feet, 9.5 inches. Kettle Falls was led on the girls side by Audrey Esvelt, who placed eighth in the 200 meters in 28.12 after running 28.21 in the preliminaries. Isabella Tiwebemal ran 29.56 in the 200 preliminaries. The Bulldogs’ 4x100 relay team of Tiwebemal, Avery Tobias, Wyn Edwards, and Esvelt placed fifth in 53.38, while the same group placed seventh in the 4x200 in 1:55.01. In the Kettle Falls girls field events, Wyn Edwards placed sixth in the triple jump at 32 feet, 11.5 inches, Julia Olson placed eighth in the long jump with a personal-best 15 feet, and Avery Tobias placed ninth in the long jump at 14 feet, 3 inches after running 18.62 in the 100 hurdles preliminaries. Rose Kelly placed 13th in the triple jump at 27 feet, 10 inches. Thornton Avery was 10th in the shot put with a personal-best 26 feet, 11 inches, and 10th in the javelin at 80 feet, 2 inches, while Grace Glaim placed 15th in the discus at 65 feet, 3 inches.
