The Colville boys basketball team continues to show brilliant offensive flashes and some dips in productivity and the Crimson Hawks went 1-2 over the new years break in nonleague action.
Colville opened tournament play with an 82-79 victory over the 1B Northport Mustangs on Dec. 29 at West Valley High School. The Crimson Hawks outlasted Northport in a high-scoring affair that featured 26 combined 3-pointers.
Parker Darnold led the way for Colville, knocking down six 3-pointers and finishing with a game-high 31 points. The Crimson Hawks led 39-27 at halftime and 63-46 after three quarters before withstanding a 33-point fourth-quarter surge by Northport. Ethan Bateman added 19 points for Colville, which hit 13 3-pointers as a team. Northport was paced by Pete Beardslee with 30 points and Cameron Mawdsley with 27.
Colville returned to the floor the following morning and ran into a hot-shooting Sunnyside Grizzlies squad, falling 77-46 on Dec. 30 at West Valley. Sunnyside used a strong second half to pull away after the teams were separated by just six points at halftime.
Aiden Sanchez scored 21 points to lead the Grizzlies, while Julian Villanueva added 20. Sunnyside outscored Colville 36-22 over the final two quarters to put the game out of reach. Jet Bateman paced the Crimson Hawks with 19 points, and Colville connected on seven 3-pointers.
After the tournament, Colville traveled to Chewelah on Saturday, Jan. 3, where the Crimson Hawks dropped a 75-48 nonleague decision to the Chewelah Cougars. Chewelah jumped out to a 27-11 first-quarter lead and maintained control throughout the night.
The attack for Chewelah came from the double-headed monster of Ryan McMillin and Grady Skok, who scored 14 points apiece. The Cougars led 44-23 at halftime and would not relinquish the lead. Brock Benson led Colville with 12 points, while Quentin Huggins and Connor Titmus added 10 points each. The Crimson Hawks were limited to five 3-pointers and managed just six points in the third quarter.
The boys team faced East Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 6; results were not available at press time. The Hawks are scheduled to host Okanogan on Friday, Jan. 9, at 5:45 p.m.
