David Wingate

David Wingate passed away on August 16, 2013. He was born in Tacoma on July 14, 1947. He spent most of his youth in Boston and returned to the Seattle area after his service in the Army as a first lieutenant from 1965-1967. He attended University of Washington while he worked for Safeco Insurance and Seafirst Bank learning all things financialIn the mid-1970s, Dave became involved in the alternate food movement. He influenced and was essential to the establishment of Equinox Food Warehouse in Springdale, as well as other food co-ops and collectives in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. He met his future wife, Marcia, in 1978 at Pragtree Farm in Arlington, where he worked with TILTH and the Provender Alliance. He was known throughout the region as "Rainbow" and was extremely proud of his efforts to bring wholesome bulk food to the Northwest. From 1980-1982, Dave worked for the National Co-op Cooperative Bank in Seattle. He and Marcia returned to their property in Rice when Dave was hired as the manager of United Security Bank in Colville. In 1992, Dave began working for the State of Washington Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development and from 2002 for the Spokane Intercollegiate Research Technology Institute as a financial analyst and certified economic developer. He was proud of his ability to provide creative financing to many small businesses and start-ups in eastern Washington. His vast computer knowledge, to¬gether with his financial finesse and astuteness earned him recognition from the governor, national economic development organiza¬tions, and local economic district.David is survived by his son, Cedar Wingate; mother, Marie Wingate; sisters, Bronwen Hunt, Martha Taylor and Bess Lavery; nephews, niece and former wife, Marcia Wingate. He was a kind, generous man who loved playing and listening to music, eating lobster, science fiction, his pets, scuba diving, and rock collecting. Dave would want to be remembered with a celebra¬tory toast, loud Rock and Roll tunes and a Welsh prayer.
