Deer Park runs past Chewelah

Colville up nextin 395 rivalryThe Chewelah Cougars kicked off their football season Friday night on the road at Deer Park. The young Cougars were in the game early on, but were eventually overpowered by the bigger, more experienced Stags, 31-7. The Cougars went into the game with only four starters returning from last year’s team (Chewelah lost 17 seniors—12 of them starters off last season’s Northeast A League championship team). At times that inexperience showed: five turnovers, six penalties and a little more than 100 yards of total offense all added up to a big learning experience for Chewelah. “We have got a lot to work to do, but it’s the first game and we got a lot of kids in to get some experience,” said head coach Jim Fisk, who added, “We’re going to make mistakes, but we don’t want to make the kind of mistakes that we made (against Deer Park). ** See full story in this week's Statesman Examiner **
