Dorothy Barrett

Our dear sweet mother, Dorothy Barrett, passed away on Dec. 18, 2011 at the age of 95. She was born Nov. 19, 1916 in Douglas.. In 1933, she graduated from Waterville High School, and in June 1935, she graduated from Morse Beauty School in Spokane. After working a short in Seattle, she moved back to Waterville where she began courting David Gallaher from Mansfield. He was a wheat and cattle rancher. They were married Oct. 29, 1939 in the Lutheran Church in Douglas. David was a pilot, and Dorothy received her pilot’s license soon after they were married. She did her solo flight over the Columbia River near Wenatchee. Together they had three daughters, Sheran, Marcia and Patty.David was killed July 2, 1944 in his private plane on the Mansfield Ranch. In 1946, Dorothy moved to Waterville and met Art Barrett, who was working as a meat cutter. They were married Jan. 26, 1947. Art had three daughters, Kay, Janis and Margaret, making a blended family of six daughters under the age of eight. In 1947 they moved to a farm on Kelly Hill. They farmed for over 50 years and were married over 55 years before Art passed away on Oct. 27, 2003.Dorothy lived a full life. She rode horses, caught fish, flew airplanes, played the piano and organ, hunted elk, played pinochle, square danced and performed in plays at the Kettle River Grange. She was an accomplished China painter and master gardener, canning much of her produce. Her pies were famous. Dorothy loved the country and the farm. While living at Parkview in Colville this past year, she enjoyed weekly trips to the farm with her daughters. Her heart was always there. Dorothy will be missed.Dorothy is survived by her three daughters, Sheran Krall and husband Bob, Ione; Marcia Hirsch and husband Ken, Ione; and Patty Braun and husband Dennis, Colville; her three step-daughters, Kay House, Colville; Janis Livermore, Rainier; and Margaret Brown and husband Paul, Tensed, Idaho; her two sisters, Esther Gallaher, Kettle Falls, and Florence Smith, Wenatchee; her 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.The funeral service for Dorothy was held Dec. 23, 2011 at the Kettle River Grange in Barstow. The graveside followed at Kelly Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held last Wednesday and Thursday at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. A special thanks is given to the staff at Parkview Senior Living, Dr. Hume and the nurses with Hospice for their wonderful care. Memorial contributions may be given to the Kettle River Grange or to the Orient Community Church.
