Kettle Falls’ Legion team gets busy this week

KETTLE FALLS—For the first time in five years, Kettle Falls has an American Legion baseball team this summer.
The team, headed by KFHS baseball coach Jeff Graves, features KFHS high school players. The team competes in the 11-team Area 3 Federal League. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after an opening season 7-3 win over Chewelah on May 26.
In that game, Kettle Falls collected only five hits and took advantage of nine walks and two hit batters by Chewelah pitching.
Cade McKern got the win, pitching four innings of one-hit baseball. Matt Thompson finished up and surrendered only one hit.
The roster includes six junior high players and six high school players: Jordan and Leo Clendennen, Brogan Douse, Lucas Matney, Dylan Shine, Hunter McDaneld, Marcelo Mendez, Matt Thompson, Cade McKern, Carter Matney, Gunner Graves and Dawson McNamee.
Kettle Falls will host Selkirk on Tuesday in a single game at the KFHS baseball field. Game time is 5:30 p.m. Selkirk will host Kettle Falls on Friday in another 5:30 p.m. game.
On Saturday, Kettle Falls will travel to Sandpoint for a noon doubleheader.
Other teams in the Federal League include Mt. Spokane A, Central Valley A, Gonzaga Prep A, Sandpoint A 14-U, Chewelah A No. 2, West Kootenay A, Prairie A 14-U, North Central A No. 2, Lewis Clark A No. 2 and Selkirk A.
